Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is funding allocated to schools for the purpose of boosting the attainment of pupils from low income families. It is intended to enable schools to provide targeted support to help children reach their full potential.

Funding is allocated for children who are Looked after by the Local Authority (CLA) and for every child who is registered for Free School Meals.

Purpose of Pupil Premium (from the DfE website)

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.
In most cases the Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.
Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. New measures will be included in the performance tables that will capture the achievement of those deprived pupils covered by Pupil Premium.
Rates for eligible pupils

The PPG per pupil for 2024 to 2025 is as follows:

Eligibility

Ever 6 FSM

Pupil premium will continue to be based on ever 6 free school meals, whereby pupils recorded as eligible for free school meals at the time of the October census, or at any point in the previous 6 years, will attract pupil premium funding.

For 2024 to 2025, this means pupils having been recorded as eligible for free school meals at any point between January 2016 and October 2021.

Children adopted from care or who have left care

Allocations for previously looked after children (post-looked-after children) will be based on the October census for mainstream and special schools.

Ever 6 service children

Service children are not disadvantaged but share the pupil premium payment process. Service child premium allocations will be based on the October census for mainstream and special schools.

For 2024 to 2025, that means pupils recorded as eligible for the service child premium since the January 2016 census as well as those recorded as a service child for the first time on the October 2020 school census.

Allocations to schools – Mainstream schools

DfE will allocate PPG to schools and local authorities (who must allocate for each FTE pupil on the January 2025 school census, at each school they maintain) the following amounts:

£1,480 per pupil for each Ever 6 FSM full time equivalent (FTE) pupil aged 4 and over in year groups reception to year 6, except where the pupil is allocated the LAC or post-LAC premium
£1,050 per pupil for each Ever 6 FSM FTE in year groups 7 to 11, except where the pupil is allocated the LAC or post-LAC Premium
£2,570 per pupil for each post-LAC in year groups reception to year 11
£340 per pupil for each Ever 5 service child FTE pupil aged 4 and over in year groups reception to year 11
£340 for each pupil aged 4 and over in year groups reception to year 11 who is either Ever 5 service child FTE or in receipt of pensions under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) and the War Pensions Scheme (WPS)

For pupils recorded aged 5 and over on the school census, PPG will be allocated on the basis of sole and dual main registrations only.
